Day 9-10: Tangalle – Mirissa

Sunjit, the driver of Karin had to go to the market to get some fresh vegetables, fruits and fish so he took us with him to the bus station in Tangalle. There we took the bus to Colombo, which drives along the whole coast. The bus was full and we had to put our bags in the trunk of the bus. We didn’t felt very comfortable with this because until then we could manage to have our bags around us. To our benefit the bus doesn’t really stop in this route because of a strong time pressure so it would be difficult for a thief to open the trunk and steal our bags. (Furthermore, the bags are too heavy for the people here :D )
In Mirissa we stayed two nights in a nice and calm homestay runned by a local family and only 100m away from the beach. A perfect destination.
Most of the time we lay on the beach and had a swim in the ocean. In the evening we had traditional Singhalese dinner (curry and rice or roti, a kind of filled pancake).
Mirissa is one of the most crowded places we’ve visited here and it is ruled by German and Russian tourists. Nevertheless, we’ve found some calm and nice places with many friendly locals and people with no lack of cultural awareness.
The mass of tourists were at one point beneficial for us because it was no problem to be out after sunset.
The last day we had breakfast in THE roti shop in Mirissa. It is called No. 1 Dewmini Roti Shop, runned by super friendly locals and an oasis of calmness and peace, far away from the crowded beaches. We had a peanutbutter chocolate roti, a banana choclate roti and a fruit platter. What a perfect way to start your day!
Completely satisfied we packed our bags and took the bus to Hikkaduwa, another famous beach village, where we will stay for four nights until our flight to Thailand.
