We're on the mainland of Vietnam now, in the center of the Mekong Delta. On our trip from Phu Quoc to Can Tho we cruise through the countryside. Rice paddies until the horizon and beautiful flowers along the small roads, which make it really challenging for our very!!! local and old bus to drive fast. We stop in every small village to carry packages from A to B like a post bus! The bus is crowded with locals smoking inside and stuff like a big flat screen or new plastic chairs (probably for a restaurant). It takes us 5hours to Can Tho where we arrive tired and hungry. We met some German girls who've already booked a hostel so we share a taxi with them to try to get a bed there as well ;)
Actually, the hostel is closed due to constructions but the owner is really friendly (and he knows that we're a good deal for him) and he offers us a dorm. The hostel is family run and all of them are really nice and caring.
On the next day we get up very early and head to the pier to book a boat trip to the floating markets. We have to bargain very hard but in the end we have a small boat for our own and pay a reasonable price.
We drive towards the market on an artificially built part of the Mekong river with dark brown water. The market consists of many boats overloaded with fruits and vegetables. For the tourists, there are smaller longtail boats which sell coffee, soft drinks and some fruits. It is really amazing to see the locals sell their goods to each other and they have such a great variety of fruits and vegetables!
we really enjoy our time on the market and then move on to our second stop, a rice noodle manufactory. We can see how the dough for the noodles is made and how they dry the noddles in the sun. At the small shop of the manufactory we buy some sweets made of rice and bananas, looking like a dried banana pancake. It's very delicious!
After our tour we explore a little bit the city center and then walk back to our hostel.
As we will head to Saigon on the next day, we go to bed early.
